Springs is the town's northeastern hamlet, wrapped by Accabonac Harbor and Gardiners Bay, and it is both the most affordable substantial pocket and the most culturally serious. Its history is a working one: residents were baymen, and the term Bonacker, taken from Accabonac Harbor, still describes longtime local families and is the East Hampton High School team name. From 1945 the hamlet became the center of American abstract expressionism, and the Pollock-Krasner House on Springs Fireplace Road is now a National Historic Landmark. The housing stock is Capes, ranches, cottages, and a growing number of architect-designed contemporary houses, on lots often under an acre inland and considerably more on the water. Waterfront on Accabonac Harbor and the creeks is the premium here. Springs has its own school district, Springs School, covering prekindergarten through grade 8.
